RUGELEY RIFLE CLUB NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 2008
This newsletter has been a long time coming due to not being able to use the website. So part of this edition is to say the website has been overhauled and those of you that have visited before will notice the different style as well as some new substance.
Since our last newsletter we have built and opened our new 10-meter indoor airgun range fitted out to ISSF standards and with automatic target changers. Although the range is rather modest as it boasts only 4 firing points it does provide the club with a wonderful new facility.

The whole facility was built entirely by volunteering club members with the hardest work being the digging out of the foundations. The whole exercise took 5 weekends to see the building in place with a further 2 weekends to fit it out.
The basic building is a large specially made wooden structure from a local 'shed' manufacturer. Length 45 feet. Width 13 feet. Ceiling height 7.5 feet. Cost £3850.00 it was delivered in sections to bolt together. We had to ensure a good base area and as our site is on a slope this entailed a lot of earth removal as well as levelling ready for slabs to be positioned and concreted in position.
Once the basic building was erected and firmly in position, work began on fitting out which included lining the buttes end wall with 4mm steel plate, the side walls with 6mm plywood and installing electricity and lighting. The fitting of the automatic target changers and the provision of the firing point bench, which had to be firmly fixed, as it had to withstand the tension of the automatic changers guide wires.
At the back of the firing point we had allowed for a setting up room with windows to view the whole of the range. Total cost (including the target changing mechanism bought second-hand) was within our budget of £5,000.
The range is now in constant use and the airgun activity reflects this with member's performances improved greatly.
We can allow a short period of self-congratulation!
The club is proud to recognize the achievements of 2 of our members, whilst a good number have performed with distinction over the past 2 seasons pride of place must go to Martyn Buttery on being accepted for the shooting academy and for England honours, also Liam Webster who has now been invited to the academy, he surely will join Martyn in the very near future. It is some time since we have had members doing England duty it goes back to when Joe Bradbury and Pam Hood did us proud.
As members will be aware the upkeep of our facilities is of prime importance and requires attention, money and volunteer work parties. As I write there are items requiring attention and as soon as the weather improves we'll be at it again so please look out for the notice!
Finally may I wish all members a Happy New Year.
